What a fun way to end the year!

So blessed to have spent the last few days of 2012 with friends and family!

image

Saw some of my college friends last Friday. Dinner and drinks at Tavern Asia in BF. It was a night of reminiscing and laughter. Realization? Hoping that there will be another barkada reunion this March! 🙂

Celebrated Daddy’s 63rd birthday in Harbor Point, Subic. We had lunch in Cabalen, watched Sisterakas, shopped, and had dinner in Ben’s Kitchen. It’s a simple celebration that shows how simple our family is. Lamon at tawa, solb na kami! Kami po ang pamilya Santos na naniniwala sa kasabihan na, “The family that makes lakwatsa together stays together.” We, thank you! :p

Sweets from my sweets!

So I chose a baduy title. 😛

But hey! I think it’s sweet when people give me food. Except when they obviously can’t finish it anymore and they think I’m a trashbin. :\

These are some of the desserts given to me by family and friends this 2012 captured via Instagram.

image

1 First Baker Silvanas from birthdaymate Ava. These came from Nueva Ecija. It’s not so sweet and the creaminess is just right.

2 Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans from bespren #2 Alex. If you are familiar with the Harry Potter series, you would know that there are beans that are delightful like those flavoured marshmallow or licorice, and there are those that will make you turn green like snot or earwax. Sa Sg yata nabili ito.

3 J.Co Donuts from Ate D. Though my donut of choice will always be Krispy Kreme’s Original Glazed, I cannot binge on it when “needed” (depressd, pms-ing, or with takaw friends) because it’s just too sweet. J.Co donuts is better for those like me who likes dessert but do not like super sweet stuff. My binge-donut of choice is AlCapone. It has white Belgian chocolate and almonds. I also like Berry Spears and Avocado Dicaprio. Not only because of the names but because masarap. Anobeh.

4 Royce’ Fromage Blanc from Pastora Jan. I love the sweet-salty combo. I wish someone would come up with a cheaper version of this. Magandang ipang-regalo ito.

image

5 Bibingkang Kanin and Suman sa Lihiya from my Mama and Tita Nida. My mom and her besty always make these native cakes when there are special occassions. These are also the usual pasalubong I give my friends. I am not fond of kakanin, but these two have made it to my nomnom-list.

6 Espasol from Atty. Argel. He calls this world class espasol from the Guimba Espasol Dream Team. It’s less sweet and it’s chewier than the ones from Laguna. Masarap ito i-pares sa matapang na kape.

7 Cibo Tiramisu from my archenemy Dave. Hands down, my most favorite dessert (after leche flan) is tiramisu. Cibo’s is one of my most faves even if its texture is… flaky. Their Mango Panna Cotta (yep, that yellow orange stuff over there was just so-so.

8 Mary Grace Cafe’s Grilled Ensaimada from my fellow-triad member Carlo. I’m including it here even if it tastes savory because it also tastes sweet (duh). Eat this with their Tsokolate Eh. Or is it Ah? Basta, the hot tablea hot beverage. Perfect for rainy evenings.

image

9 Ferrero Kusschen from kapatid na Joel. Chocolate covered hazelnuts from Germany that my bro bought in Singapore. Hehe, labo. My friend Katharina told me that kusschen means kisses. Mwaaaah to bro for giving me these.

This is my favorite merienda. I like to pair this with lomi. Cheap thrill. Ten pesos lang itong turones, 5 pieces.

11 Abe’s Sikreto ni Maria from Babe Homer. This is very easy to make. It’s just suman topped with vanila ice cream and bucayo and served with ripe mangoes. I am thinking of making this for media noche (kung sipagin, probably not, nyahaha). I will add buco strips and sago.

12 Starbucks Truffle Cheesecake from Shani Black. Hah. This is probably the best cake in Starbucks. Hello, truffle na, cheesecake pa. Self explanatory na dapat, di’ba? :p  Shani and I call this “non-metaphorical celebratory cake”. Please don’t ask why.

I’m positive that 2013 will bring more desserts. Friends, don’t fail me. Hehe!

Thanks for feeding me and making me fat! 🙂 We’re all in this together. :p

Friday Five: Birthday 2012

1 Surprises
I love surprises! I started receiving surprises a week before my birthday. Friends gave me pink and red roses, mango cake, caramel candies, bangles, chocolates, a portrait, cologne, perfume, make-up, et cetera! The biggest surprise was a voucher for Sofitel’s Sunset Buffet kasi talagang sa company email ko pa sinend ni Sarit. Hahaha! Bongga! 😀

image

I wonder when I’ll get my tablet. :p

2 Salubong
I finally got the small get together that I always wanted. There were only 5 of us (me + Jap + Cindy = Donnie + Jan) in Chili’s. I expected 7 but 2 of them couldn’t make it. (You know who you are, I miss you both. Kitakits before the world year ends!) I posted an invite on Fb a couple of hours before the salubong but decided to delete it because it might turn into a drinking session. And well, you know that I am trying to control my alcohol intake. :p

image

We were a fun bunch, especially when Donnie started talking about the end of the world, Palestine, Harry Potter and being a patrol ng Pilipino. Trust me, everything is connected.

After Chili’s, Jap and I had coffee in CBTL to catch up (haha as if hindi kami magkatelebabad ng madalas) and so I can stay awake for the…

3 Simbang Gabi
It was my first time to hear go to the dawn mass at St Paul Church. It’s a pretty church. Magaling pa ‘yung pari mag-sermon. 🙂 I should go there more! It wouldn’t be a problem since it’s very near where I live. As in isang tumbling at isang kembot away lang.

image

Loved that I was able to hear the homily about Jesus being the reason for the season. This is the reason why I chose to have a small celebration this year. I don’t want to put a larger value on my birthday than the bigger party on the 25th ever again. 😛

4 Sine (at Soup)
After only 4 hours of sleep and a loooong time of finishing my McDonald’s lunch with Ate B, I rushed to Greenbelt to see Oryx so that we can see The Hobbit.

image

Nothing to say but I loved it because of the part that it looked like a musicale. Nyahahaha! Dwarves are more awesome that Elves! Or Hobbits!!!

Went to Via Mare after. Yehey! Three of my favorite things: wild mushroom soup, bibingka, and talking to my favorite boybud about my favorite topic!

5 Senti/Saya
M y 31st birthday was most def the smallest and simplest I’ve had. It’s also the most special. I guess it’s because it’s the only one that didn’t stress me out. (Well, except for the short time when this person posted something on my timeline that made my head hurt. Anyway, moving on.) I may have not received all that I asked for but this birthday surely has made me feel extremely blessed.

image

Belated happy birthday to me! Thanks to all those who remembered!

Thank you God for the privilege of living this life. 🙂

A Happy 1st Weekend of My Favorite Month

Yaaaay for the first weekend of December!

Welcomed my all-time favorite month in Mango Tree Bistro with great friends (plus an nff) and wine. It was the perfect mix of witty conversations and senti hits. We should have more nights like this, hopefully also with more wine.

Here’s chuma-chubby me, balingkinitan na Cindy, ang nff na si Joseph, and direct-to-the-point Jap.

I lovelovelove my highschool bff and my college bff. 🙂 They are two of the most beautiful people I know.

(Joseph, saka na kita tatawagin na beautiful ‘pag close na tayo.)

image

Without a doubt, I will not be able to follow a proper diet during the holidays. I have been trying to eat less so I wouldn’t feel guilty for indulging in the coming days, and so I wouldn’t look like Miss Piggy come 2013. I try to avoid rice (because it’s eeevil) but I wasn’t able to resist when I craved for Aida’s Chicken Inasal. Waaah! I also wasn’t able to to resist pouring some chicken oil on the rice! Napakain kasi I got tired from looking for materials for my costume in every ukay-ukay in MCS. (I can hear you saying “Excuses, excuses!” Hehe!) Costume for what, you ask. For our team’s Christmas party! I spent Saturday figuring out if I’ll go as Katniss Everdeen, Cleopatra, Arwen, or the Energizer Bunny.

image

Katniss wins. Because of her boots.

Speaking of fictional characters, I absolutely liked Rise of The Guardians! Aaaaaand the Easter Bunny is Wolverine Hugh Jackman!  It’s a movie with a simple plot that revolves around the fears and fantasies of kids. It’s not as funny as Shrek, not as epic as Mulan, but it’s definitely fun and heartwarming.

image

Here’s what made me tear up:

“You’re the one who put me here. The least you can do is tell me why.” – Jack Frost to Man in the Moon

What made me go nyahaha? Finding out who really makes all the Christmas gifts in Santa’s factory. :p

image

After the movie, I ate one of my favorite combos from Cash & Carry- gyoza and Ferino’s bibingka. Weird, noh? Pero promise, masarap! Trust me! May talent ako sa pag-partner ng savory-spicy and sweet-salty nomnoms!

I also have a talent (skill, if you wanna be technical about it, pfftttt) for cooking quick and easy dishes! Hello, laking Del Monte Kitchenomics, Wok with Yan, at Cooking with The Dazas yata ito! :p I made two veggie dishes last Sunday. If I can’t eat less, I’ll just eat something non-fattening. I’ll share the recipes for my special no-saute monggo and tarantang chopseuy in a separate entry. Wait for it. 😉

My yaaay-worthy weekend was capped off by this lesson:

image

Last Sunday’s service was about God being able to turn a situation of limitation to a situation of multiplication. He is the ultimate provider and that is something I (or we) should always remember. When we have troubles, we always depend on our own understanding and this always results into fear– which is always an exaggeration of reality. Trusting Him is always the best choice, may it be in a desperate situation involving finances or career or relationships… anything! The Grace that God uses in one is the exact same Grace that He uses in another!

The weekend was His reminder to me that I am abundantly blessed and I can be blessed some more. More importantly, it was to instill in my mind that I am very blessed so that I will be a channel of blessing.

Thank You God for allowing me to share my time, ideas, love, and all the other gifts You have generously given me. And cheers to more blessings that I know I will receive this month!!! 😀

Halloween 2012

I will share bits and pieces of my October 31 to November 4. It’s Halloween and All Saints and All Souls and regular days but I don’t want to name this entry Undas Weekend! :p

—–

As mentioned in my last post, I have not experienced trick-or-treating yet. In fact, the most Halloweeney thing that happened to me last October 31 was when I ate (beef) papaitan for the first time. Thanks (?) to Enzo! To those who do not know what it is, it’s INNARDS STEW. It’s a bitter soup with tripe, heart, liver, intestine and others. What makes it bitter? BILE. I quickly drowned the icky taste with beer. Much as I did not enjoy this first time, I can’t say it’s also the last time because I promised myself that someday (hopefully not soon) that I will eat papaitang kambing. Yes, goat. Meh!!!

image

Mang Rudy’s Grill Beef Papaitan. Charming, isn’t it?

—–

I spent November 1 mostly at home. Only went to Cash & Carry to get some toiletries andsatisfy my craving for gyoza and bibingka. Weird combo eh? Try mo. Masarap. Thought of watching a movie alone but they weren’t screening Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay, so I went home instead and read a Gaiman book.

—–

November 2, I was in the office. Yeah, you read that right. I worked during the holiday. Nothing new. And in observance of All Souls’ Day, I watched Casper. Devon Sawa was a cutie! Also saw some baduy Tagalog horror movies in Cinema 1.

—–

November 3, I was comfortably lying on the sofa watching a dessert challenge in Masterchef when my friend Jero invited me out to eat. Busog pa ako so I said yes but suggested we see the latest Bond movie too– Skyfall. So we went to Resorts World. Dinner at Kenny Rogers first before the movie.

image

Kenny Rogers Healthy Plate + muffin

I had this embarrassing convo with the waitstaff:

Me: Miss, isang Healthy Plate sa akin.
Waitstaff: Okay, ma’am.
Me: Miss, pwedeng pa-change ‘yung kasamang iced tea to soda?
Waitstaff: Ma’am, hindi po.
Me: Ay, bakit?
Waitstaff: Hindi na po healthy ‘yon.

The customer is always right? :p

the 23rd spy film in the James Bond series

Skyfall. Mmmm hmmm mmmm, Skyfall. It was okay. Sorry, Bond fans. It was JUST okay. The first half was interesting and promising. The 2nd half was dragging and I had to fight to stay awake. It’s not as sexy and action-packed as I expected it to be. And sorry, I do agree that Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva is one of the creepiest Bond villains ever but I wish he was made more sinister.

Too bad Bond girl Berenice Marlohe’s character did not live long. Sayang. Ang sexy pa naman niya! And sorry friends, Adele’s song is also just okay for me. I don’t regret watching it though.  Loved the chase in Turkey and the word association. While the serious dialogue was blah, the humour was good. I’ve always been a sucker for dry, British humour.

—–

And lastly, November 4. The highlight of this day was the service at Victory Pioneer. The last leg of the The End Series was about heaven, aptly called The Never-Ending Story. I don’t know about you but I believe in heaven and hell. I would like to go to the former and one of the best things I heard about what kind of place heaven is is this:

“Heaven is a prepared place for prepared people.”

Sabi nga ni Pastor Robert, Creation happened in only 6 days, and it’s magnificent! What more ang heaven, eh more than 2,000 years nang pine-prepare ni Jesus ang heaven para sa atin. To listen to The End series, please visit http://victorypioneer.org/podcasts/the-end. 🙂

Hot Dinner Date in Chihuahua

…with JAN! 😛

Jan who happens to be my newest favorite person! Our friendship is on fire and well, I was craving for something spicy. So there. HOT DATE. :))

image
{Ay, Chihuahua!}

I used to frequent the Makati Ave branch and it was my first time to eat at the Gb store. Also, I was supposed to blog about Chihuahua a long time ago, but I accidentally deleted the draft. :p Anyway… I wanted something meaty yet light so I had the Carnitas Burrito (slow-cooked pulled pork, 295php). Hahaha! Chicken Tacos (295php) and Quesadillas (can’t remember how much). The price is okay for the servings and the taste. I liked the burrito, but I still prefer the one with steak. 🙂 We loved the quesadillas! The taco was so-so for Jan (gusto niya may cheese pala kasi); I liked it slathered with lots of sour cream.

Pero grabe!!! 80php for a bottle of Coke! Oh well, Makati price. I wouldn’t have my meal with any other drink though. That or margarita!!! Too bad I had an early call time the following day and my alcohol tolerance has been really embarrassing lately. Here’s an old picture of me (well my hand) with Joko (her hand, lol) and Jeeves holding Margaritas and Michelada (195php each). What is a Michelada, you ask. It’s a beer-based cocktail with tabasco, worcestershire sauce, lime juice AND Maggi seasoning. Uhhhh… it’s an acquired taste. I have not acquired it yet. Mwehehehe. I’m sticking to Margarita.

image
{1: the hotsauce wall, 2: my fire liquids of choice, 3: compulsary vanity shot, 4: Jan talking to a cute baby she doesn’t know}

Noticed that they didn’t have the Charlie Sheen Crazy Sauce and Crazy Mother Pucker’s Hot Sauce. Settled for the Ass Kickin’ Original Hot Sauce, Caramba Chili Verde, and the Red Devil. The spiciest was sauce #1 but I loved the red Devil the best. Ang sarap with the burrito! Truly made my dinner with Jan a hot date! :))

image
{Kudos to the owners of Chihuahua Mexican Grill & Margarita Bar!}

We were lucky for ariving there before 7. By 8pm, the place was already packed with families and yuppies. I hope that Chihuahua will add more items like potatoes with cheese and sour cream. Or rice with shredded barbecue. I have a feeling that they will soon. 🙂

My GS BFF’s Wedding

It was only July this year when I reconnected with my classmates from Mountain View Village School*. Jonalyn was one of my dearest friends back in gradeschool and Jero was  our classmate/my childhood enemy. Ang galing talaga ng social media. If it weren’t for Facebook, I wouldn’t have talked to them again and I wouldn’t be able to see Jhona get married last Friday. 🙂

image
{with SpiderKid}

It was the first Iglesia Ni Cristo wedding that I witnessed. It was a good thing I decided to bring a shawl. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be let in because the dress I wore was sleeveless. I removed the shawl as soon as I was seated though. Hehe. It was a small and intimate wedding attended by the couple’s closest family and friends. Feeling special tuloy ako na andun ako. Jero (my +1 by default) wasn’t able to wake up in time for the wedding because salbahe siya he was so exhausted from work. Okay lang. I befriended one of the guests– a five year old kid named Miguel who told me he’s Peter Parker.

image
{with Andy the groom and Jhona the bride}

As expected, I cried when I saw my friend (who looked so radiant!!!) walk down the aisle with her dad. I think, when it’s my time to get married masisira ng bongga ang eye makeup ko. Nyahahahah! The service was short. As in parang kalahati ng sa Katoliko. The minister (?) talked about Adam and Eve and what  husband should be to a wife and vice versa. I forgot to ask if he’s a close friend of the couple or kung mabilis lang talagang siyang ma-move ng story ng first parents natin. 🙂

image
{elementary batchmates}

The reception was held at the function room of One Rockwell. Seatmates ko si SpiderKid and his mom Ava. Miguel calls her Mary Jane. :p I had to meet Jero outside because maarte siya he’s shy to enter the venue alone. On my way outside, I felt a spray of identified goo, Waaaahhh! Yung isa sa mga kalapati na pinalipad ng couples shit on some of us! I just wiped it off using my bare hands. And I wanted to strangle Jero kasi malas siya.

image
{childhood nemesis}

I liked that the celebration was short and sweet. Seeing Andy gaze adoringly to my friend made me smile ‘coz I’m baduy like that. 🙂 And cheesy ako. I like seeing evidences of love. Natuwa rin ako to see their relatives get along. I felt that suportado talaga nila ang union ni Jhona and Andy. I pray that God will bless their marriage with a happy home, cute and kind kids, and great adventures!

image
{I was in Makati but my heart was out of town. Nyahaha.}

Oh, and guess what… I caught the bouquet.

Ano nga uli ang sabi nila ‘pag ganon? :p

Coffee & Cupcakes @ SLICE

Chocolate, yema, and cupcakes– these are a few of my favorite things. I’d like to thank my lucky stars and the food gods for Slice‘s Choco-Yema Cupcakes!

So a couple of weeks ago (haha, sorry late post), I went to BGC to satisfy my craving. It wasn’t hard to tag my friends along because… well… who in his right mind would say no to cupcakes? 😀

image
{Carlo and Argel in front of Slice, the cafe is right beside Jamba Juice}

And there must be coffee, of course!

image
{cappuccino served with granola}

I loved that their capuccino was served with granola. The coffee packed a punch. I actually regretted getting it because I had a hard time sleeping after. My fault. I shouldn’t drink coffee past 6pm. A must-have in the morning, me thinks. I’m not sure how early Slice opens though.

image
{Carlo with the cuppycakes!!!}

The cupcakes were smaller than I expected but I’d rather have quality than quantity any day. In that case, the cuppycakes did not disappoint! Masarap nga! Even Carlo (our very maselan/choosy friend na ayaw magpa-picture) liked it!

If  Argel says something is “masarap” for at least 5x, it means it’s REALLY good. Heard him say the Choco-Yema Cupcake was delish 4x. He said I just didn’t hear the 5th time because I was away, smoking. There’s no smoking area in Slice. I’m sure Sen. Pia Cayetano wouldn’t approve. #1 She bats for non-smoking in public places.#2 She owns Slice. 🙂

image{Argel and I ready to judge the Choco Yema cupcake}

Okay. Choco-Yema Cupcake. A.Wow… B.Yum… C.Wow,yum!!! If I grew up with these around, I would’ve been a fat kid. I practice displine now, so I’ll have it just every time I’m in High Street! :p  I feel it would be a crime against myself if I don’t eat it if  I’m just in the area.

Mmmmm… moist cake… luscious frosting… And it’s just (if I remember it correctly) 70php a pop! Not bad for a cupcake in High Street, yes?

image
{choco yema cupcake and rocky road & s’mores cupcake}

If there was a beauty contest for cupcakes, Slice’s Red Velvet will not be my bet. BUT this humble looking thing is probably the yummiest red velvet cupcake I’ve ever had. This is considering I don’t like my dessert too sweet and I love my frosting thick.

image
{honest to goodness red velvet}

The S’mores Cupcake was good but nothing to write home about. Liked the chocolate base but wasn’t delighted with the toppings. Now maybe if it had more melted mallows… Haha! Anyway, I’ll try the Citrus Burst next time.

For a resto that has been around for less than a year, Slice’s menu has a lot to offer. Friends say that I should go back for their Brown Arroz Caldo, Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich and Seafood Puttanesca. I’m definitely trying those and also getting their other desserts!

And of course, getting more Choco-Yema Cupakes! Ahahay! I have to remember to eat with caution!

Friday Five: Malulupit na Linya

Halos isang buwan akong hindi nakapagsulat. Daming ginagawa.

*WHEW*

Pakkshet. Impulsive gambling is one of my personality defects. At least, I gave them something to talk and laugh about. :p

3. “Ang problema kasi sa iyo, nagse-set ka ng sobrang high standards. Tapos, ‘pag may dumating na ganon sa buhay mo, ikaw na rin mismo naglalagay ng barriers.” – Archenemy Dave

Sure, I set high standards. Bakit naman hindi? Naniniwala naman ako that I deserve to be with a great person. Hindi naman perfect person ang hinahanap ko. I’m just waiting for the right person for me. At barriers?

At sa mundo ko rin, being inconsistent is a red flag behaviour.

5. “Ang puti-puti mo ngayon. Ang payat-payat mo pa!” – Gradeschool Classmate Jonah

One thing’s for sure. Ang ganda-ganda-ganda kong bata dati. Ngayon, maganda na lang. LOL

Hey you, bored person reading this… Happy Friday! I hope this weekend will not be a windang weekend for me and you.
