Friday Five: Jap’s Picks for My Rock Playlist

Got bored with my playlist so I sent an SOS to the best person who can help me.

“Hoy Jap, sendan mo ako ng upbeat rock!”

And so she did. I opened my email, expecting that audio files would be there. Not only the files were emailed, she even included a blog-like description of the songs that she chose to send. Good job, Jap for treating this as an assignment. I give you 5 stars for effort! :p

 alt=

Here’s what she put in the email and what I think of each song.

1 Louie Louie by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts

Jap: This became a bonus track from the album “I Love Rock & Roll”. During the 70’s, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts was the symbol of bad-ass all girl rock band they wore clothes that were unaccepted by the common crowd back then but is totally in fashion today. I especially like the part when she Sings “…woe bebe! say we gotta go!” I always sing with the music on this part alone!

I give this song five stars!

Iya: I was hesitant to listen to this at first because I thought this is the original version of my absolutely hatest 80’s hit with lyrics “Brother Louie Louie Louie, oh she’s only looking to me!” , hehehe! This reminded me not to judge a song by its title especially if its artist is a rock royalty. This song rocks my socks.

Watch video here.

2 I Love Rock & Roll

Jap:   A song by the same band was released in 1979 featuring the Sex Pistols ( so cool ) this one is simply a rock classic! If there is a chick flick- this one is a chick song with an attitude!

This is a rockin’ four!

Iya: Was a bit insulted with the idea that my bff assumed that I didn’t know this song yet. Excuse me, Jap. This is already in my playlist. But fine, I have Britney Spears’ version. Hihihi. :p Also, this is one of my videoke picks.

Watch video here.

3 Ain’t Talking ‘Bout Love by Van Halen

Jap: This has funky I-don’t-care lyrics & glamorous electric guitar riffs w/c is overall a satisfying sensation in the ears lol! Eddie Van Halen started the Van Halen band in 1974 & got a break in 1977 courtesy of ene Simmons from the band Kiss who discovered them at a local club. By the early 80’s, they were considered rock gods.

Five fucking stars!

Iya: Hands down, my favorite among the five. I would like to dedicate this song to my last boyfriend. Bwahahahahahaa!!! I should listen to more Van Halen.

Watch video here.

4 Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes

Jap:  Another one of them rock songs inspired by drugs. It’s a feel good feel high no need to understand the lyrics song. It was released in their 1983 self-titled debut album.

I give it a high 4.

Watch video here

Iya: I’ve become familiar with this song from hearing it in various soundtracks, like Gross Pointe Blank. Only came to know the title because of Jap’s email. It’s really not something that will wake me up in sleepy mornings to prepare me for combat in the workplace, but I can definitely listen to this on roadtrips.

5 Take On Me by Reel Big Fish

Jap:  This is a reggae-ska-rock take of the song originally sung by A-Ha.

3’s a charm.

Iya: I normally prefer originals over covers, but my vote goes to Reel Big Fish. Sory, A-Ha. Loved the reggae vibe. Made me headbang and sway hips. Weird combo, but well… it’s a sorta-weird song.

Watch video here.

At the end of the email, Jap said “Hope you like my picks! Hope it picks you up! Mwah!”

True enough, the songs did pick me up this morning on my way to the office. I only had a couple hour of sleep, but I rocked my way to Pacific Star while listening to these upbeat rock goodies. I hope you also get to enjoy these songs as much I did!

Have a rockin’ weekend, everyone! 😉

The Return of Friday Five

It’s Friday and the 1st day of the last month of the 1st half of the end of the world of the year. Whew! Thought of reviving the Friday Five section of my blog just so I can post ANY 5 RAVES/RANTS that I feel like letting the whole world know. I think the last time I had an F5 entry was when I was still blogging in blogspot. Been so long since I last had this quick satisfaction of attempting to immortalize the mundane and seemingly mundane here in the www.

Here it goes. My first F5 after a lengthy time…

1 TURON

image

I love buying turon from Jollijeep. It’s only 12php. Don’t really care if there’s langka (jackfruit) inside as long as it’s glazed with a crazy amount of sugar. Turon is my favorite local sweet snack. You can have your bananacue and camotecue. Gimme my turon.

Also…

Q: Anong saging ang nagma-magic?
A: Eh di… turon!!!

2 KICK DRUM HEART by THE AVETT BROTHERS

image

This indie rockband song was introduced to me by Eunice. There’s a sidestory about hearing this upbeat song in the wedding of a very non-upbeat bride and groom.

You can listen to the song here.

“I won’t look back anymore, I left the people that do. It’s not the chase that I love, it’s me following you.”

Yes, I am cheesy like that. :p

3 DOWNTON ABBEY

image

Just finished Season 1. Will start season 2 tomorrow while I’m vacationing in Bataan. Liking it because of the dresses, the witty dialogue, and Maggie Smith. I’ve loved Maggie Smith since Sister Act. Siya si Madre Superiora. 🙂

4 FREE CONCERT TICKETS

image

Phil Star delivered compli NKOTBSB concert tickets to the office today. I was thrilled to receive it even if I won’t be able to go and see Nick Carter in flesh. Just as I mentioned, I’ll be in Bataan. Will just videoke my alltime fave BSB hit, Anywhere For You. Uhuh. That saksakan ng cheesy song. I’m so fucking consistent, yeah?

5 GRIMACE

image

I’ve always loved Grimace and this picture just made me love him more! Grimace is infinitely better than that dinofag Barney.

Til next Friday! 😉

Happy weekend!

The Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival

I haven’t been to Puerto Galera in years. I haven’t had a reason to go back until I learned about the Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival.

Foreign and Filipino artists such as Cynthia Alexander, Caliph8, Nyko Maca, Christina “Badkiss” Bartges, Japan’s DJ Krush and South Korea’s Gong Myoung performed their hits at Mt Malasimbo to a crowd of 1,500 last February 18. Part of the proceeds from the ticket sales were used to plant trees around Puerto Galera and for the installation of solar energy for the Iraya Mangyan community’s barangay hall. Moreover, the Department of Tourism has included this as one of its 2012 eco-cultural plans.

The 2011 Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival 2011 was a total success that it left the crowd wanting more. Volume Unit Entertainment, the company behind Malasimbo promised that the 2012 festival would be even better. Next year’s festival will have more musical and visual artists, including the 69 year old Joe Bataan, the African-American-Filipino king of Latin soul from NYC. He’s also the creator of Salsoul Records, one of the most prominent disco labels.

The Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival will be from March 2 to 4.  Tickets may be reserved by emailing info@malasimbofestival.com. For more info, please visit www.malasimbofestival.com

I don’t know about you but I’m going to ask my college friends to go back to Galera with me for the Malasimbo fest.  I think it will be fun to party again in a place that I used to frequent almost 10 years ago. :p YOU! You should invite your friends too! See you there! 😉

Mr. A-Z

I’m still not sure if I’m going to the Jason Mraz concert this Sunday. The first time I heard that the Grammy-award winning artist is coming back to Manila, I tweeted Joko and told her that we should watch just so we can be emotional masochists and remember the guys we used to like who are major fans of his, haha!

I only know 5 songs of Mr. A-Z… The Remedy, I’m Yours, A Beautiful Mess, Sleep All Day, and Wordplay. No, wait. there’s another one. Lucky. That cheesy, pathetic single with Colbie whats-her-face. So there. I think Jason Mraz is a talented artist but I’m not a fan. Still, I sorta wanna go to his concert.

Kinda sucked that I helped my friend, Sean to get patron tickets and I have no idea yet if I’ll be able to go. Anyway, at least I can get free steak and I’m always happy to help a friend. I didn’t know that Sean tweeted that whoever helps him score tix will get a prize from Dillingers 1903. :p Yay for me winning a contest that I unknowingly joined!

Hmmm… so am I watching this Sunday? Probably not. But I think I want to now.

To all those watching, ENJOY! 😉

Phunk! Pump! Pow!

Partied the night away at the MOA concert grounds for the Black Eyed Peas concert. Well okay, not the entire night as there were dragging moments when I wondered why they didn’t get someone to host the event and moments when scenes from Apl de Ap’s Maalaala Mo Kaya episode flashed in my mind. And Smart launched their new logo. Errrrr. Whatevs. I hated that I had such a hard time using my Smart line at all last night to update Fb and Twitter!

Oh well. Aside from the Will.I.Am, Apl de Ap, Fergie and Taboo performing their worldwide hits such as Shut Up, Don’t Phunk With My Heart, Boom Boom Pow, I Gotta Feeling, Dirty Bit/Time of My Life, Don’t Stop The Party and Where Is The Love, there was also a portion when Wil.I.Am did some freestyle rap and wowed the audience with his mixes that included samples from Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Journey and Usher.

The US Ambassador graced the event and announced that he’s making the Fil-Am Apl de Ap an adviser to the US embassy in recognition for his charitable projects. Apl also talked about his foundation and performed a song with kids holding lots and lots of yellow balloons. Yellow, because the We Can Be Anything Campaign is a partnership between Apl de Ap’s and The Ninoy & Cory Aquino Foundation.

I just got to say that Fergie’s absolutely gorgeous and I loved it when she came up the stage wearing her pink dress with lights. Her performance of Big Girls Don’t Cry is still stuck in my head.

Got nothing to say about Taboo except I love his new hairstyle. Nagmukha siyang hot! 😀

Rain, Vincci, Ace and me!

BEP amused the audience by saying Tagalog words. My most favorite albeit it’s in Taglish was, “Ready na ba kayo mag-party???” I replied with, “That’s what I came here for!!!” I think I said that too loud ‘coz the people stared at me for a good 3 seconds. Harhar. But hey, that’s the truth! 🙂

No doubt that the Black Eyed Peas is one of the best groups EVER. I’d be glad to break the collarbone of anyone who wants to disagree. Hehe. :p I felt for Fergie when she started crying and said, “This concert is our graduation. And we are the Black Eyed Peas!”

The night ended that we were all sweaty from jumping and dancing and singing and screaming. Everybody’s feeling that the night’s gonna be a good night was right. 🙂

Thanks, BEP! I hope it’s just really a break that you’re taking. The world needs more feel good music and stellar performaces. And thank you so much for performing PUMP IT. It’s my all-time favorite hit. It has also been my alarm tone for several years. 🙂

Congrats to Futuretainment for producing an awesome show! Can’t wait for the next! 🙂

Upside Down – Two Minds Crack
Bakit? Parang premonition na he’s gonna turn me on, turn me around and turn my whole world upside down. Nakakahilo.
Panaksak pusong lyrics: Baby you don’t understand / Our love lies lost but you’re still hodling my hand / Oh and then you walk away / Just tonight I want you to stay

Somewhere Only We Know – Keane
Bakit? Eight years after naming magbreak, lumabas kami uli at noong ihahatid niya ako sa bahay, ito ang kantang narinig ko sa kotse kung kelan sakto ang oto ay nasa parte ng kalsada kung saan kami laging humihinto. (Wholesome ito na hinto, ika ha!) Nag-init ang ulo ko nung marinig ko ito sa trailer ng Winnie The Pooh The Movie.
Panaksak pusong lyrics: And if you have a minute, why don’t we go / Talk about it somewhere only we know / This could be the end of everything / So why don’t we go / So why don’t we go

Para sa Second Puppy Love

Say It – Voices of Theory
Bakit?
Panaksak pusong lyrics: Am I giving enough / Is this all that should be / When water gets rough / Will you still swim with me?

Every Now and Then – Earth, Wind & Fire
Bakit? Hahaha.
Panaksak pusong lyrics: When I’m alone anytime I hear music play / When I reach, reach for the phone / Why does everything good / Make me think of you baby

Para sa First Love

U & I – Cynthia Alexander
Panaksak pusong lyrics: The color in between us is the sky that binds us / Never-ending you / Begin on & on & on / I only know U are for real / But last night in black & white / A dream of lovers’ eyes / A song on an old phonograph / A moving photograph of U & I

Can We Still Be Friends – Mandy Moore
Oh and btw, pwede rin sa amin ang Someday We’ll Know ni Mandy Moore and Jason Foreman.
Panaksak pusong lyrics: It’s a strange sad affair / Sometimes seems like we just don’t care / Don’t waste time feeling hurt / We’ve been through hell together

Para sa Kaibigan na Minahal

Friends – Mike Francis
Bakit? Sa description pa lang, di’ba? Friend I wasn’t supposed to fall for nga.
Panaksak pusong lyrics: Watch me my friend / I feel you reachin’ in my mind though I know we’ll be in love just for one night / I keep on trying to change my point of view again/ but everything seems to be the same / I want you where you are now / I don’t wanna lose you

What Might Have Been – Lou Pardini
Bakit?
Panaksak pusong lyrics: I’m ready this time / I know that I’m no longer undecided / Don’t wanna be a fool wondering / What might have been

Para sa Kasalanan

I Love You, Goodbye – Celine Dion
Bakit? At take note, nagka-repeat pa ito. With a different person naman.
Panaksak pusong lyrics: You’ll find someone who’ll be the one that I could never be / Who’ll give you something better / Than the love you’ll find with me / Oh I could say that I’ll be all you need / But that would be a crime

I Don’t Want to be Your Friend –  Nina
Bakit?
Panaksak pusong lyrics: Don’t call me in the middle of the night no more / Don’t expect me to be there / Don’t think that it will be the way it was before / Don’t think that I care / I’m not over you yet / And I don’t wanna be your friend

Para sa Taong Hindi Ko Ma-Classify

Kung OK Lang Sa’Yo – True Faith
Bakit? Dahil dapat kakantahin niya ito sa akin noong birthday ko but then again, I threw a bitchfit so he ended up singing this to me before we called it quits. Ang labo lang, di’ba? Buong relationship naman namin malabo talaga. Ang klaro lang doon, minahal ko ito. Sobra. Grabe.

Nakakapagtaka at nakakakaba.
Panaksak pusong lyrics: And I guess that’s how you started like a pinprick to my heart / but at this point you rush right through me and I start to drown / And there’s not enough room in this world for my pain / Signals cross and love gets lost and time passed makes it plain

Marami pang ibang kanta tulad ng I Try ni Macy Gray, It Means Nothing ng Stereophonics, Against All Odds ni Phil Collins, It Might Be You ni Patti Austin, Heartbreak Warfare at Friends, Lovers or Nothing ni John Mayer, Here is Gone ng Goo Goo Dolls, Thinking of You ni Katy Perry, Rewind ni Paolo Nutini, I Fall to Pieces ni Patsy Cline, Everybody Hurts ng REM, One ng U2, An Ex is an Ex for A Reson ng the Courteneers, Wasted Time ng The Eagles, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart ni Al Greene, Go Your Own Way ng Fleetwood Mac, Migraine ng Moonstar 88, I Know It’s Over ng The Smiths, Ikaw Lamang ng Silent Sanctuary, Something to Say ng Harem Scarem, Ikaw Ang Lahat sa Akin ni Martin Nievera, Set You Free ng Side A at maraming maraming marami pang iba.

Wala tayong magagawa. Emo nga daw ako. Hindi bitter, excuse me. Sa totoo lang, I’m ok. People change, memories don’t, ika nga.

Sushi, Zombies and A Little Respect

Last Saturday was exceptionally fun. 😀

Spent the entire day with my quiznight teammates (aka my favorite nerds) eating, laughing and singing. =)

Yakimix

Joko opened Yakimix at 11am. Our lunch there lasted for almost 4 hours. What is Patay Gutom? :p

Above are photos of the food I ate. Three plates plus grilled stuff plus dessert. Partida pa ‘yan kasi naka-“diet” ako ngayon. Iwas sa kanin at sweets.

Last photo of course is the mandatory group pic. Left to right: Aji, me, Shani, Jeeves, Maj, Rudi, Vlad, Maricris and Joko.

Blooey, Mike, Joseph we missed you!!! 🙂 Hmmm… sino pa ba na-miss namin? Ika nga ni Jeeves… *evilmaniacallaughter*

Zombadings

After an awesome lunch and a really long kwentuhan about childhood memories also known as Joko and Shani’s full of win moments, we went to Glorietta to watch Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington.

I wanted to see this because I am a big Roderick Paulate fan. Since he’s the only reason I needed to catch Zombadings, I didn’t watch the trailer, didn’t read any stuff about it. hence, I had no idea that Eugene Domingo is also part of the cast.

I found the movie hilarious but I still liked Ang Babae sa Septic Tank better. There were a lot of predictable scenes in the movie, but it’s okay because of the darling cast. Ang cute and ang galing nila Martin Escudero (Remington) and Kerbie Zamora (Jigs). Ang refreshing nung character ni Lauren Young. Awesome si John Regala para siyang nakababatang Johnny Delgado. Even Janice De Belen was ok, eh normally naiirita ako sa acting niya.

Roderick’s and Eugene’s roles were small but they provided the funniest scenes. As expected.

Videoke

Gilmore after the movie. I do not want to tell you were we went for videoke as it’s a very special place. We don’t want people “stealing” this golden hole in the wall. Hahaha. Sobrang panalo kasi talaga. Sabi nga sa Zombadings— AWARD!!! Hahaha!

When we entered our room, this was the first things we saw.

Heckyeah. Livin’ it up at the Hotel CALIFORNIS! Ahahahaha!

Anyway. Aji started our videoke sesh with Counting Crows’ Mr.Jones. I followed with Katrina and The Waves’ Walking on Sunshine. May dramarama ever rin ako, but you know me, hindi pwedeng magka-videoke night na walang SPTD or Saksak Puso Tulo ang Dugo songs.

My favorite performances (performances daw o) were:

1. Halik by Joko (Oo, yung sa Aegis. Birit kung birit!)
2. Dreamlover by Shani (Kay Bobby Darin, super oldskool. Cute ng lyrics!)
3. I Do by Marie (Hay nako, Lisa Loeb. Nadali mo talaga.)
4. Gold by Mike (Song of choice ko sana ito eh, pero mas may K si Mike kantahin ito kaysa sa akin. Duh.)
5. These Dreams by Aji (Mejo may kurot ito sa puso ko, but oh well. :,))

And of course, the song that has been blasting in my skull since that night hence the title…

6. A Little Respect by Vlad (Hindi na Always ang favorite Erasure song ko dahil dito, hahahaha!)

I would also like to pat myself on the back for singing my all time favorite OPM keso song, Mahihintay sa ‘Yo by Dingdong Avanzado (lyrics: mahal, mahal na mahal kita, hindi ako magbabago asahan mo itoooooooooo) AND barbie Girl by Aqua.

Ended the night with the song WHY CAN’T IT BE by Rannie Raymundo.

Thank God we still had some laughs (reminiscing Joko’s and Shani’s childhood stories/empathy exercises/matapobre punchlines) at Ersao, where we they got some tea to cap off the fantastic night.

TODAY IS OUR RESIDENT MICROBIOLOGIST’S 45th 30th BIRTHDAY! (sabi ni Joko? Kwe? matanda ka na eh)

If Not Now, When?

YESTERDAY!

July 28 was Incubus Day!

This was their set list for the If Not Now, When? concert at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum:

1. Megalomaniac
2. Wish You Were Here
3. Consequence
4. Pardon Me
5.Anna Molly
6. Love Hurts
7. Circles
8. Look Alive
9. Promises, Promises
10. The Warmth
11. Drive
12. Sick Sad Little World
13. Isadore
14. Glass
15. Talk Shows on Mute
16. Adolescents
17. A Crow Left of the Murder

Encore:
18. I Miss You
19. In the Company of Wolves
20. Nice To Know You

That’s right, bitch! Twenty songs! I’m so glad I went to their 3rd concert! It was my first time to hear Incubus live so I couldn’t relate to my friends who said that the 2nd one was better. :p

Franco was their opening act and they were good. I just had trouble paying attention to them because I was too excited for Incubus to start.

I expected they wouldn’t play a lot of their old hits, but I was wrong. I’ve never been so happy for not being right! I even had my phone ready with internet. I bookmarked a site with Incubus lyrics because I wanted to sing along to even their unpopular songs. I know! Pathetic, pero walang basagan ng trip! Hahaha!

I sang my heart out to Anna Molly (my favorite Incubus song) and Wish You Were Here (nakaka-relate kasi ako, heehee). I was at my happiest when they played Promises, Promises. It’s from their latest album, If Not Now, When? Odd that they did not play that track and opted to do In The Comapny of Wolves and Isadore. Another odd thing was Brandon Boyd did not take his shirt off. Sayang!

Anywaaaaay, it was an epic concert and I hope Incubus will consider going back to Manila for the 4th time.

I also hope on their 4th, Brandon Boyd takes off his shirt or go all the way! :p

Phil So Good

WHO IS JULIEN DROLON?

Singer, songwriter, and former International Reporter are all words that can be used to describe Julien Drolon, but they merely scratch the surface. Drolon (born in Nantes, France on the 5th of February 1982) is on a mission to promote peace thru his love for music. He first arrived in the Philippines last 2007 and came back at the end of 2009 and decided to start his musical career.

This French singer with a Pinoy heart describe his music style as feel good music which combines pop, reggae, funk, and rock. He considers Jason Mraz, Bob Marley, Jamiroquai, Donovan Frankenreiter, Patrice and Asa as his musical influences. Drolon performs on stage with his equally-talented Filipino band composed of Girlie Capulso (back up vocals), Enzo Queyquep (lead guitar), Joseph Duenas (bass), Leal Nanca (keyboard) and Joven Palencia (Drums).

Drolon already played in Hong Kong and mainland China, at an Asian music conference, Music Matters Festival, which was held in Hong Kong last May 26-29, 2010. He also performed for the opening of the China Music Industry Park in Shanghai last July, 2010.

Addressing the issue of why he started his career in the Philippines, he responded, “It’s a place that is blessed with amazing musicians that want to collaborate on the making of my album and Filipinos are music lovers”. For his first album, Drolon is working with producers Jack Rufo and Angee Rozul.

AND SO?

Well, this is me. Nationalism and patriotism are at the bottom of my list of virtues, but when I heard Julien’s PHIL SO GOOD, I felt a smile spread across my face and I my Pinoy heart (no matter how close to apathetic it normally gets) skipped a beat.

Julien Drolon’s first single “Phil So Good” is available for download exclusively at www.orangemagazinetv.com.

Here are the lyrics:

Paradise islands, white sand beach
Tropical jungles where tribes still live
Land of Rizal and the guitar strings
Gotta find some time to live it here

I am in the Philippines x 3
And I feel so good, so good

People speak tagalog, sometimes taglish
They love to have fun, they know how to live
With a warm welcome, they will make you feel
Like it is your turn to smile and sing

I am in the Philippines x 3
And I feel so good, so good

comma down selectah…
seat back relax uminum ng beer
itaas ang bote isigaw ang cheers
lay back, while listenin smooth jazz and
feel the cold breeze and keep the wheels blazin
cause all we need is a time to relax
ihanda na ang serbeza lets drink some wapak
sige sige dont stop, non stop ang saya
pag-katapos ng lahat libutin luzviminda
tawagan mo na si jo and i will text julien
hatakin na si joven all over again
cause the best thing in life is life and that’s true
huwag hayaan ang saya lagpasan ka nito
take a zip just a trip and take a deep breath
libutin tiaong gubat all by your self
fiyah grill, cold beer, lay back and chill
watch the daet sunsets thats the thrill
sounds cool huh

I am in the Philippines x 3
And I feel so good, so good
Boracay in summer, I went there twice
Wanna feel colder, go to the rice terraces
Palawan is where I took my love
She wanted a romance under the sun
Surf is the best in Siargao
You can also dance up to Malasimbo
